When is comes to controlling frizz, getting a great haircut that removes excess bulk and allows the hair to lay closer to the head is at least as important as the right products. A gentle reminder to your stylist not to over-texturize the ends of your hair this time of year may be in order. One of the best topical antidotes for sunburn is fresh aloe vera. If you do not have a plant in your kitchen to remedy minor burns, you can buy fresh, whole leaf aloe vera gel at your local health food store. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and has humectant properties. Products that are cooling should be avoided; ones with peppermint, menthol, or calamine lotion all contain alcohol which only further dehydrates skin tissue.
Shea butter and olive oil can be soothing emollients that are also moisturizing. Cucumber is another good natural anti-inflammatory. Aloe can be applied directly to the skin, or try mixing it in a bowl with sliced cucumber and ice, then creating a compress with a cotton towel.

Summer is in full swing, which means it’s time to break out the sun block, self-tanners, and bronzers. Although by now most of us are diligent about applying sunscreen, we often forget about protecting our hair. Ultraviolet rays, chlorine and saltwater can compromise the integrity of the hair. If your hair is color treated, you are not only prone to fading that occurs from sun exposure, but also dehydration. To protect your investment during the summer months try using the Soleil line by Kerastase. The line has a UV protection of 15, as well as a balancing shampoo that removes chlorine and salt from the hair. The hydrating conditioner is a great way to seal and protect the hair, while the restorative masques help to repair any damage. I also love working a dime size amount of natural oil (Jojoba, almond, avocado) through dry hair. It acts as a barrier for your hair since oil and water don’t mix. The truth about frizzy hair

Frizzy hair is a complaint that many women share. Most look for a magic product as a quick fix and don’t address the cause of the problem. Products that reduce frizz in the hair usually consist mainly of silicone, which simply coats the hair. Many of these products also contain alcohol which allows them to be lightweight and evaporate quickly, but unfortunately, your smooth shiny hair will only last a few hours. These products only temporarily mask the issue, here are some real solutions!

1. Pulling permanent color through the ends of the hair

Many colorists will pull permanent color from your roots to your ends to even out color that has faded. This is not only unnecessary, but can be damaging. A gentle reminder to your colorist that ammonia based haircolor should only be applied to your new growth.

2. Dehydrated hair

Choose hydrating products that are intended to moisturize the hair, not just decrease frizz. Try using a deep treatment (such as a masque) on your hair once a week- or visit your salon for professional treatment. 3. Less Shampooing, more conditioning

Try skipping a day and in between shampoos, just condition. Rinse well with warm water, and comb through your favorite conditioner. It will gently cleanse the hair throughout the summer so the hair can keep more of its natural oil balance.

Summit Speech School Fundraiser

I recently had the pleasure of being a speaker for Summit Speech School’s annual fundraiser at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club in New Jersey. Summit Speech School enables children who are deaf or hard of hearing to take their place in a hearing world by providing educational and therapeutic support services through auditory and oral programs. They invited me to speak about beauty to the members of the country club and it was a wonderful experience to be involved in their efforts. I gave insider beauty tips, spoke about hairstyle changes through the decades and how often we rely on styles of the past for current inspiration. I also had the opportunity to do makeovers on two parents of students at the school and they both looked so beautiful! Here are some photos from the event:
